The former mayor of the small north Texas city of Athens in Henderson County has pleaded guilty to federal child obscenity charges.

Reports say 64-year-old James Montgomery pleaded guilty to sending obscene materials to a minor.

In June of 2020 officials say Montgomery, then the mayor of Athens, began communicating by text messaging with a person he believed to be a 15-year-old female.

Montgomery sent messages to the child describing sexually explicit acts that he wanted to perform on the child and offering to pay the child if she would meet him and have sex with him.

Investigators say Montgomery showed up to a location to meet the minor, who turned out to be an undercover cop. He faces 10 years in prison.
