It seems that artificial intelligence is just a part of life now.  But how do we feel about AI controlling our lives?

That existence doesn’t seem too far off as Texas officials are currently exploring further use of AI in our government.

A chatbot named “Larry” has already been utilized to help Texans sign up for unemployment benefits and answer any user-generated questions about unemployment cases.  So why not utilize AI in other departments?

In fact, more than a third of state agencies are utilizing AI technology in some form or another, including using AI for translating languages into English and call center tools such as speech-to-text and using AI to enhance cybersecurity and fraud detection.

State Rep. Giovanni Capriglion from Southlake said per the Texas Tribune, “This is going to totally revolutionize the way we do government.”

Opponents to AI worry about the technology being used in decision-making processes like determining who qualifies for social service benefits, or how long someone should be on parole.  There are also other concerns about effecting the privacy of Texans.

As such, the state is forming an advisory committee to recommend how the technology will be further utilized.  “We’re gonna have to set up some rules,” the committee’s founder said.
