A bill that would make it illegal for social media companies to ban users based on their political viewpoint is headed for the Governor's desk.
The bill has passed both the House and Senate and would require social media companies to file reports of content they've removed and create a system for appeals and complaints.
Sponsor Briscoe Cain says companies should be classified as common carriers like phone and cable companies that are barred from discriminating against customers.
The Baytown Republican says a small number of companies have massive influence over social justice movements and public thought.
Critics say the bill could expose users to hateful content and say the measure could infringe on social media companies' own first amendment rights.
