Texas Department of Public Safety troopers are now providing security at the Alamo, replacing the private Alamo Rangers who have guarded the historic site for roughly five decades.

The transition follows a new state law that shifted oversight of the landmark from the General Land Office to a newly created Alamo Commission.

DPS began assuming duties this week, marking one of the first visible changes under the updated management structure.

The agency will handle law enforcement and security operations on the grounds, while some former Alamo Rangers may apply for roles with DPS if they wish to continue working at the site.

State leaders say the move is part of a broader effort to streamline operations and standardize public safety at one of Texas’ most visited historical destinations.

The Alamo remains open to visitors as the commission continues outlining long-term plans for preservation, education and site improvements.
