The University of Texas and the University of Oklahoma have taken the next step in realigning college athletics, formally asking the Southeastern Conference to extend an invitation to join in time for the 2025-26 athletic year.

SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey issued a statement Tuesday morning, announcing the latest development.

"While the SEC has not proactively sought new members, we will pursue significant change when there is a clear consensus among our members that such actions will further enrich the experiences of our student-athletes and lead to greater academic and athletic achievement across our campuses," said Sankey.

Media reports say the SEC conference presidents have called a meeting for Thursday afternoon to discuss "potential expansion opportunities." 11 of the 14 current members of the SEC would need to approve Texas and Oklahoma joining the league.
