The state has reported its first locally acquired case this year of Dengue Virus.
The disease is transmitted by mosquitos and the vast majority of cases in Texas are from people returning from tropical areas where Dengue is endemic.
Lara Anton is with the Texas Department of State Health Services warns that people may believe mosquitoes are no longer around due to cooler temperatures. The fact is, in Texas they are still around even into December.
She says 25% of people bitten by an infected mosquito develop symptoms. One in 20 of that group will get a severe infection that could kill them.
The Texan who was infected lives in Cameron County and has recovered.
