If Roe vs Wade is overturned by the US Supreme Court, Texas' trigger law would ban abortion after a month. That doesn't sit well with the vast majority of Texas voters.

Joshua Blank with the Texas Politics Project at UT Austin says 78% of voters polled believe there should be at least limited access to abortion. 15% of voters said it should be completely outlawed.

"It might surprise you to learn in Texas, like in most places there's a very small minority of people who would prohibit access to abortion in all circumstances. 42% or so of Republicans believe abortion should be accessible in cases where the woman's life is in danger or the pregnancy was the result of rape or incest, at the very least."

He says about two thirds of Democrats believe abortion should be accessible to a woman at her discretion.  39% of all voters believe the same.

He says the main takeaway is that it is a very small share of Texans who think abortion should never be accessible.

"As we continue to see the political response from the leaked document, we're continuing to hear a lot about how Texas is a pro-life state. That's certainly true of the lawmakers the state has elected, Texas Politics Project polling at UT Austin has consistently shown about equal shares of voters who identify as pro-life and pro-choice. This is not an issue in Texas where a vast majority of voters are driving policy. It's actually an issue where a minority of voters are driving the vast majority of the policy."
