U.S. Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) says President Donald Trump's confidence in Mike Waltz is unshaken, given that he has nominated him to be the next U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations.

The White House announced Waltz would be stepping down from his post as National Security Adviser.

Waltz had been under the microscope after he accidentally invited a journalist into a Signal Chat conversation involving military strikes on Yemen.

"I'm glad that Mike is going to be representing us at the United Nations," Cornyn said on a conference call Thursday with reporters in Texas. "I'm sure President Trump will have somebody who will be of comparable experience and, most importantly, somebody he trusts as much as he does Mike Waltz."

Cornyn listed a number of national concerns globally that a new National Security Adviser and the U.N. Ambassador would have to face.

"Whether it's through a nuclear Iran, or through acts of aggression by Mr. Putin or even President Xi in the Indo-Pacific," Cornyn said.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio will serve as Interim National Security Adviser. Decades ago, Dr. Henry Kissinger served both roles at the same time under Presidents Nixon and Ford.
