MOCHOVCE, SLOVAKIA - NOVEMBER 6: A general view shows the cooling towers of the Mochovce nuclear power plant on November 6, 2023 in Mochovce, Slovakia. The key to Slovakia's nuclear strategy, Unit 3 of Slovakia's Mochovce NPP, has achieved 100 per cent power. The power plant is expected to cover 13 percent of the country's electricity needs, making Slovakia self-sufficient, according to the plant's administrator Branislav Strycek, CEO of Slovenske Elektrarne. Federal nuclear regulators approve the construction of the first research nuclear reactor in over 40 years, and it will be located in Texas.

The Dallas Morning News reports Abilene Christian University is set to host the advanced nuclear reactor, which will be built on campus by the university’s NEXT Lab in partnership with Abilene-based company Natura Resources.

This approval could lead to the state’s first new reactor since the second unit of the Comanche Peak power plant was licensed in 1993.

The reactor will be housed in the university’s Dillard Science and Engineering Research Center, which was completed in August 2023, according to the Dallas Morning News.
