The Uvalde CISD police chief, who is also a member of the city council, will not be granted a leave of absence from his council duties in the aftermath of last month's mass shooting at an elementary school.
Speakers at the Uvalde City Council meeting Tuesday night argued that Pete Arredondo should not be granted leave -- and council members agreed.
Arredondo is the school district police chief who has taken some of the blame for not allowing officers to enter the classroom where 19 children and two teachers died in the May 24 shooting. He has missed two city council meetings and if he misses a third, his colleagues could expel him from the council.
Once the city council meeting wrapped up, Uvalde Mayor Don McLaughlin spoke bluntly about how investigating agencies have failed to keep city leaders informed.
"To this day, we have not received one briefing from the (Texas) Rangers, the DPS or anybody. No one. So, we're just in the dark just like you are. And we're tired of it," he said.
McLaughlin also said he believed Col. Steven McCraw -- the director of the Texas Department of Public Safety -- is heaping all the blame on Uvalde city or school district police while he ignores the mistakes made by his own officers who were on the scene that day.
