Heat Advisories and high grass fire danger continues

Heat Advisories and high grass fire danger continues

Good morning, everyone, and Happy Friday!

Well, we made it through another work week! And for many young adults and college students, it’s back to school time, with most colleges getting underway next Monday.

Unfortunately, we’re also welcoming back the HEAT! This heat wave is going to continue through the weekend and pretty much all of next week, with temperatures staying well above average and little to no rain in the forecast.

The drought situation across North Texas is still okay for now, with our rainfall deficit sitting around half an inch below average for this time of year. But there are some hints in the extended forecast that a pattern change could develop by next weekend — not this weekend, but the following weekend. We could potentially see rain return to the forecast and temperatures finally drop below 100°.

And you know what? Eventually, it has to happen! We’re getting closer and closer to September, and believe it or not, we’re only about 39 days from the first day of fall!

For today, Heat Advisories are back across North Texas and will likely continue through the weekend and possibly much of next week. A strong dome of high pressure in the upper levels of the atmosphere remains parked close to North Texas, keeping us hot and dry.

We’ll also have very windy conditions today and tomorrow, with gusts potentially reaching 25–30+ mph. That means critical grass fire danger across North Texas, so please be extremely careful with anything that could spark a fire.

This morning, we’re waking up to temperatures in the upper 70s to near 80° under clear skies. Winds are already gusting over 30 mph in some locations. Today’s high will be around 101°, after we hit 102° yesterday.

That 102° officially marked our 20th triple-digit day of the year at DFW Airport. And interestingly enough, about 20 days of 100°+ temperatures is the average when using the 1991–2020 climate averages.

Your 7-Day Forecast

Friday: 101° — Hot & windy

Saturday: 101° — Hot & breezy

Sunday: 102° — More heat

Monday: 102°

Tuesday: 103°

Wednesday: 104°

Thursday: 104°

So yes… the weekend weather looks nice if you enjoy sunshine, but it’s definitely going to be hot and breezy!

I’ll continue watching those extended models for signs of that potential pattern change by next weekend. Maybe — just maybe — we’ll finally get some rain and a break from the triple-digit temperatures.

Until then, stay cool, stay hydrated, check on your neighbors, never leave kids or pets in vehicles, and please be careful with anything that could start a grass fire.

Have a great weekend, everyone
