Available to stream February 5, Kinda Pregnant, stars Schumer as a character named Lainy who navigates the jealousy of her best friend’s pregnancy by wearing a fake baby bump which ultimately leads her to love. Written by Schumer, there’s no doubt the film has endless laugh out loud moments, but the comedian also found it important to empower women on a more serious note as well.
“We’re trying to show these different aspects of like, not every woman who gets pregnant is over the moon the whole time,” Schumer said of the more serious tones in the movie. “The trauma [of pregnancy and birth] get just kind of brushed over — especially in movies — you really don’t see very much of that, so to get to take a minute and express that stuff in a comedy and make it palatable where you can still be on this ride — that is what we’re most proud of.”
Schumer’s ability to balance serious and funny earned her high praise from co-stars Jillian Bell, Brianne Howey, Will Forte, Lizze Broadway and Urzila Carlson who all felt an extreme level of satisfaction knowing Amy had a hand in piecing together the final product.
“[When] you shoot a movie, you do a million takes and we improvise so much you’re like, ‘I have no idea what’s going to make it into the end result,'” expressed Bell. “Knowing that Amy was in post [production] on that, I was like, ‘OK, we’re in a good place.'”
Added Howey, “It’s Amy Schumer, Happy Maddison and Netflix — it’s a dream team.” The sentiment was echoed by Forte who said he agreed to the movie right away after seeing Schumer’s name on it. “Receiving the script knowing it was coming from Amy… I was like, ‘Do I have to read it?’ It was the easiest decision of all time.”

Aside from the hard work that went into the creation of the film, it was also the camaraderie on set that the crew says set it apart from other opportunities, especially for first time movie actresses Lizze Broadway , and Urzila Carlson.
“I haven’t seen a female led movie in so long,” shares Broadway, who responded to an open casting call for her role. “It’s just one of those moments where you’re like, ‘Oh my gosh, I can’t believe I’m working with all these talented women.’ This is kind of my first big film and they just guided me and supported me and… it’s such privilege.”
Carlson agreed after sharing Schumer personally reached out to her via Instagram DMs to encourage her to audition.
“I got a message from Amy in my DMs on Instagram… she said ‘Hey, I have a script. Can you act? I think you’ll be great in this.'” While Carlson had never acted before, she shared the role felt like a natural fit for her personality. “I read it and I was like, ‘this isn’t acting this is me… two weeks later I was on a plane.”
