Family of Asian woman shot to death in Compton calling for hate-crime investigation

The family of an Asian woman who was shot to death in Compton this weekend is calling for a hate-crime investigation.

The victim has been identified as Sia Marie Xiong, 28. She was the mother of a 3-year-old boy and lived in Fontana.

Akeisa Lowe, Xiong’s aunt tells KNX her biracial niece was shot in the torso and died in the hospital.

Lowe says she’s not sure how Xiong ended up in Compton, but the LA County Sheriff’s Department says the woman was shot and killed just before 6 a.m. Saturday on East Kay Street.

Xiong’s father is Cambodian and her mother is Black,

“She was a free-spirited person with a whole lot of love and compassion,” Lowe told KTLA.  “It’s really hard for me to understand for somebody to hate her so bad they want to kill her.”

A GoFundMe fundraiser has been set up to help pay for funeral service costs and provide support for Xiong’s son.

“No one can deny the dramatic increase in Asian women being murdered across the country,” Najee Ali, a prominent South L.A. activist told KTLA.
