"Five of the eight were fully vaccinated and none received a booster," the department said. "One reported international travel and two reported travel outside of California."

Two of the people who have tested positive for the variant have previously had COVID-19 infections and two of them live in the same household, the department added.

Preliminary data on the Omicron variant indicates that it is highly contagious and that being fully vaccinated may not provide enough protection against infection, health officials said.

Due to the highly infectious nature of the variant, health officials are urging all to either get vaccinated or sign up for their booster shots and to continue waring face coverings in crowded public spaces.
