The Delta variant continues to be the primary version of COVID-19 in Los Angeles County, public health officials said, which is why they’re urging Angelenos to remain cautious as holidays like Halloween draw near.

“While the County is in a better place this year with 60% of the nearly 10.3 million L.A. County residents fully vaccinated, Halloween can still present COVID-19 transmission risk this year,” health officials said.

When planning Halloween this year, the public is asked to consider the level of risk in each situation presented and remember that COVID-19 spreads more easily in the following scenarios:

- Closed spaces with poor air flow
- Crowded places with many people nearby
- Close contact settings especially where people are talking, laughing, screaming, or breathing heavily close together

The safest way to enjoy the spooky holiday is to only attend activities that are outside — like pumpkin patch visits, outdoor ghost tours, hayrides and the family-favorite trick-or-treating, public health officials said.

Events like costume parties, when modified to be outdoors, are also acceptable.

“Wherever possible, aim to be outside, particularly if you are with individuals, including children, that are not yet vaccinated,” health officials said in a statement.

The advisory remains the same as it has for nearly the last two years - masks covering your nose and mouth should be worn if in crowds or close contact with others not in your household.

There are currently 898 new COVID-19 cases in L.A. County (1,477,686 cases to date), four new deaths due to COVID-19 (26,414 deaths to date) and 658 people currently hospitalized with the virus, according to data shared on Sunday, Oct. 17.
