As schools in the Los Angeles Unified School District are gearing up to head back to school, there’s one necessity of students and staffers’ list – COVID-19 testing.

Students and employees lined up Monday morning outside Northridge Middle School to begin their initial COVID-19 testing. It’s one of 12 different schools in the L.A. school district that’s beginning their weekly testing schedule.

Interim Superintendent Megan Reilly announced last week that employees and students in the district who chose to do in-person instruction are required to do weekly COVID-19 testing regardless of their vaccination status. The decision comes as the Delta variant continues to spread and the number of COVID-19 cases in the county continue to grow.

Parents who don’t want their children to get tested can choose to opt into online instruction.

One parent in line told KNX 1070 she’s in favor of the testing.

“Anything to get a better handle on this COVID is…I’m on board,” she said.

One student agreed. “I don’t have any problem with it as long as I get to go back to school.”

Not everyone is on board though. One man told KNX 1070 testing feels like an unnecessary step if you have already gotten the vaccine.

“I don’t like it because if you already got you vaccinated twice [we] should be past getting tested,” he told KNX 1070.

School for LAUSD begins Aug. 16.
