Riverside City Councilmember and state assembly candidate Clarissa Cervantes was arrested Saturday on suspicion of driving under the influence.

Cervantes was pulled over by California Highway Patrol officers shortly after 1 a.m. Saturday and charged with misdemeanor DUI, according to booking records. She was released on bail and is next due in court on August 30.

There were no injuries, Cervantes’ spokesperson Derek Humphrey told the Press-Enterprise.

“Last night, I made an irresponsible decision that I deeply regret. I take full responsibility, and I want to apologize to my family, my community, and the residents of the district that I represent,” Cervantes said in a statement to Southern California News Group.

Cervantes represents Ward 2 on the Riverside City Council, which includes Sycamore Canyon, Canyon Crest, UC Riverside, and Eastside. She’s also running for state assembly in the 58th district, a seat currently held by her sister Sabrina Cervantes.
