The space shuttle Endeavour will be on the move Friday, as crews with the California Science Center will move the display across Exposition Park to later be hoisted into launch position.
The 122-foot-long shuttle will be moved using a “self-propelled modular transporter” beginning at 8 a.m., according to City News Service.
Ken Phillips, the curator for Aerospace Science at the California Science Center, told KNX News' Jon Baird the display will be huge for both Los Angeles.
“It's huge for California, I think, and for the western region of the United States because it is the only flown orbiter that's west of the Mississippi,” he said.
“So we have it here in Southern California and we're going to place it in the launch configuration, which means it's gonna go vertically.”
On Monday night, early Tuesday morning, crews will hoist it up with a sling and a giant crane where it’s expected to be put in the launch position with an external tank and the solid rocket boosters.
The shuttle launch display is expected to be the only launch-ready display from a former NASA space shuttle in the world. It will be located in the Samuel Oschin Air and Space Center.
It’s opening date has not been revealed at this time.
