Carlsbad author Josan Wright Callender has just published a realistic historical fiction novel called “Making Do: Growing Up Colored in the Jim Crow South,” a book which forces us to reckon how racism continues to affect contemporary society. She discusses the personal story lines explored in the book, as well as how racism today mirrors the racism of that period, and what she was the single most important historical event that marked the end of Jim Crow and the beginning of the Civil Rights movement.
