As of 2022, seniors (ages 65+) comprised nearly 17% of the population of San Diego County. Seniors in our community are experiencing loneliness and isolation in great numbers. They often live alone and lack transportation; many have lost family and friends. Experts have found that social isolation has tangible impacts on quality of life and longevity, equal to the risk of smoking fifteen cigarettes a day and greater than the risks associated with obesity, excess alcohol consumption and lack of exercise.
The San Diego Women’s Foundation connects, educates, and inspires women to come together in collective philanthropy, and has announced that its latest grant cycle will focus on preventing isolation among seniors. Stephanie Cook, Executive Director for the San Diego Women’s Foundation, discusses why senior isolation is something they want to address.
