The Padres aren't going to go out without a fight when it comes to the National League wild card race. After a disappointing start to their road trip, they gave the front office plenty of reason to buy at the trade deadline by sweeping the Marlins in Miami. The Marlins scored 3 runs early off of Walker Buehler, who then settled down and pitched into the 6th inning, providing some much-needed length for the team. Manny Machado drove in a run with a double in the 5th inning to draw within two runs. Then the Padres rallied in the 8th inning, with Machado tying the game on a 2-run shot to center field. Jackson Merrill put the Padres on top for the first time all game with a solo homer, and Luis Campusano provided an insurance run with an RBI-single to left. The 2-run cushion was all Adrian Morejon and Mason Miller needed to secure the win as the Padres climbed back to .500 and just 2 games out of the final wild card spot with the trade deadline looming in a week. The Padres will rest on Monday before a crucial homestand against the Rockies and Giants.
