109 ski resort employees test positive for COVID-19


A ski resort in Colorado has had a COVID-19 outbreak.

The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment announced that the outbreak happened at Winter Park Resort in January, per CNN.

At least 109 resort employees tested positive for the novel virus.

In a joint statement with the Grand County Public Health, the resort said it was cooperating with the health department to “further investigate changes that could be made that could suppress COVID activity among employees."

Contact tracing revealed transmission was not related to guests at the resort.

"Through case investigations, it has been determined that these cases have not been traced back to transmission through interaction with visitors but, rather, from social gatherings outside of the workplace and congregate housing," the organizations claim.

The resort and GCPH will monitor the outbreak until two incubation periods (a total of 28 days) pass with no new outbreaks surfacing.

"It is important to remember that it is every individual's personal and professional responsibility to make the right decisions and hold each other to the safest standards possible. Please continue to take preventative measures to protect yourself and others," the ski resort's Communications Manager Jen Miller said in the press release.

With ski season underway in Colorado, other resorts have also reported cases, but Winter Park has seen the largest outbreak, per the CPDHE data.

The resort reopened on December 3 and implemented on-site testing for employees.

“We did extensive planning and had to get approval from the state on our operations,” Miller told the outlet.

Measures taken by the resort include mask mandates, dining limitations, reservations to limit people at the resort, contactless service, and additional staff on-site.

The outlet notes that some visitors reported masks not being enforced, but Miller said the resort has “done extensive work and continue to evolve our operations as necessary.”

“I can't speak to one individual's experience, but we do appreciate feedback and will continue to make modifications with the health and well-being of our employees, guests and community as our top priority,” she explained.
