Brigantine, like most shore towns, prohibits drinking beer and liquor on the beach, which is hard to enforce.
So City Council is considering a change in the rules for issuing beach tags and permits for four-wheel drive vehicles on the beach that would include allowing officials to check inside coolers that exceed specified size limits.
Councilman Rick DeLucry, an attorney by trade, likens it to going to an Eagles or Phillies game.
"On your ticket somewhere there is a waiver of whatever rights you may otherwise have to not have your person or the things you’re carrying in inspected," DeLucry told KYW Newsradio. "As we all know, you go to a game and the security at the gate can demand and does demand to look inside purses and bags and whatever else you might be bringing."
Revisions are also likely for how those four-wheeler permits are issued, since they can create traffic problems particularly on busy summer weekends.
The bottom line is that it’s a quality of life issue for visitors and residents alike.
"We don’t know that this is going to be the right, the best answer,” he added, “but it’s the best we can come up with after a lot of experience, good and bad in measures that weren’t quite as extensive."
Those changes are expected to be approved before the end of the year.
