Delaware expects to start testing up to 80,000 people a month, covering the state's entire population over the course of a year.
And for the people who test positive, Delaware public health director Dr. Karyl Rattay says contact tracing has to be the next step.
“Get those people isolated safely as quickly as possible, identify any of those contacts and get those contacts quarantined,” Rattay said.
The state will be working with Maryland on contact tracing.
“We had a lot of people crossing lines, employed in one state and living in another state, and to be able to track people across state lines is really important, to be able to share that data is important,” she added.
The Delaware National Guard will also be involved in contact tracing, with members now being trained, while the state builds a data system — on a smaller scale — to do the work.
State officials are also looking to hire around 200 Delawareans they can use as contact tracers and support staff.
Rehoboth Beach is also reopening the beach and boardwalk on Friday for exercise only. The boardwalk can be used to get to businesses that are open, and face coverings are required for both.
The state now has over 6,700 positive cases, with over 200 fatalities.
