PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Philadelphia hosts the official kick off for Immigrant Heritage Month.
From the discussions on Philadelphia's history as a sanctuary city to a seminar on refugees' rights, Karely Hernandez with FWD.us, who helped organize some of the events, says all the programs going on throughout the month have an important message.
"There's a lot going on right now in this political climate, and so we want to create a welcoming area and a welcoming space for immigrants," Hernandez said.
Flag stickers representing countries from all over the world adorn the interactive "I love Philly" temporary art installation at LOVE Park.
"The giant heart we have here is emblematic of the theme of this month, which is love for one another," said Juan Escalante with FWD.us.
Escalante says during the month, they're holding events and programs throughout the city to educate people on what it means to be an immigrant.
"We want to make sure that folks understand the contributions, who immigrants are and remind those people who may be first, second, third generation that their families also have an immigrant story," he said.
He adds in these heated political times, they want to use the month to show immigrants they have allies.
"There are those around you who support you, believe in you and are willing to work alongside you to see your success come into fruition," he said.
Escalante says throughout June, the city is also highlighting different resources they have to offer to immigrants.
The Philadelphia Office of Immigrant Affairs helped organize local celebrations and immigrant resource information sessions.
