One New Jersey town is buying, picking up groceries for those who need help

MOORESTOWN, N.J. (KYW Newsradio)  If you live in Moorestown and are having a tough go at it during this pandemic, you’ll find help right at your doorstep.

“What we are trying to do is make sure that Moorestown residents are taken care of during this time,” said Mayor Nicole Gillespie, talking about a program set up in conjunction with the Rotary Club and the Parks and Recreation Department.

It’s called Neighbors Helping Neighbors, where local volunteers go grocery shopping for residents in need.

“I was getting lots of emails and phone calls from people who needed help or were concerned about their neighbors or perhaps their parents who lived in town and I thought we needed a one-stop for people who needed help. And they can just go to that. So far, we’ve had calls mostly from people who cannot get out of the house, or are limited in obtaining food for their families,” Gillespie said.

The program began a week ago with an anonymous donation, and days later, they have had over 30 volunteers.

“We have had over 30 people volunteer to help with whatever we needed help in this project, mostly shopping and delivering, and I’m proud to say we have raised over $6,000 to help pay for food for families who need it,” she added.

Gillespie says anyone can ask for help.

“These are tough times, and there’s all kinds of things happening that we’ve never experienced before,” she added.
