PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) -- The leaders of one of Philadelphia's most diverse police districts is looking for residents who would want to join their Police Advisory Council.
Captain Matt Gillespie of the 18th District says his is one of the most unique areas of the city, covering a lot of different types of places, including the University of Pennsylvania.
"All the way to, unfortunately, some of the most poverty stricken areas," Gillespie said. "But we also have one of the biggest Mosques here in Philadelphia along 43rd Street. We have fabulous business corridors, 52nd Street, 60th Street, Market Street."
Gillespie says while many of the Police District Advisory Council members have been involved for a long time and have been doing a great job, he'd like to see some new faces join, especially younger ones.
"Maybe a little bit more diverse group," he explained. "Business owners, religious leaders, students, and have them come to the table, literally and figuratively, to help with some of the policy decisions I make for the district."
Gillespie says anyone who lives in the 18th District and is over the age of 18 is eligible to be a council member. He adds that a strong bond between police and the people they serve makes for a strong and safer community, noting that the council has helped police make numerous arrests and address issues thanks to simple tips from the public.
