PennDOT's Alexis Campbell says the answer to that question really depends on you.
"You need to have either a REAL ID-compliant driver's license or photo ID or a passport, military ID, other form of federally acceptable identification after Oct. 1, 2020 to board a domestic commercial flight or enter a secure federal building that requires ID at the door," Campbell said.

So, if you plan to fly and don't have a passport, a REAL ID will be a must.
You won't need a REAL ID however, to drive, go to a post office, vote, apply for federal benefits or visit a hospital.
Getting a REAL ID is easy, Campbell says, but you have to assemble some documents.
"Either a birth certificate with a raised seal that's issued by the department of vital records in the state where you were born or a valid U.S. passport if you have one," Campbell said. "We need a Social Security card and two proofs of your residency in Pennsylvania."

Those can be your existing driver's license, your vehicle owner's card or insurance card, or bills with your name and address on them.
A REAL ID replaces your existing driver's license and there is a $30 fee to do it.
