At a time when nearly all of sports is shut down, Eagles general manager Howie Roseman feels fortunate a virtual version of the draft is still scheduled to take place next week.
“We want to make sure that we’re doing the right thing as we go through this period of time and this distraction, and hopefully provide a welcome distraction to our fans,” Roseman said.
Eagles vice president of player personnel Andy Weidl had high praise for the staff members who are keeping the front office connected to the outside world during the pandemic.
“We’ve been efficient. We’ve been able to get our work done. The connectivity we felt as one with our group last week, 30 people plus on the call, was outstanding,” Weidl said.
Weidl says they are still able to learn a lot about players through video chat.
“It’s more one-on-one that we’re getting and our coaches and our scouts talking to players. We’ve done it. I think it’s you just feel like you’re one-on-one in a room and you're alone,” he said.
Roseman says one of the biggest challenges for some NFL staff members will be keeping their kids occupied while their parents select players during the draft.
He adds the uncertainty of the season due to the current crisis won’t influence who the team selects in the draft.
