Do you wear contacts? Switch to glasses to prevent the spread of COVID-19

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Are contact lenses safe to wear during the coronavirus pandemic?

Dr. Christopher Rapuano, chief of the Cornea and External Disease Service at Wills Eye Hospital, said they could pose a health risk.

“It’s not ideal, because when people wear contacts, they’re touching their face, they’re touching the contacts, so it is a way to spread the virus,” he said.

For some people, their vision is the same whether they wear glasses or contacts. Rapuano said they just prefer the aesthetic of contacts.

“Other people who wear contacts and really don’t see well with glasses,” he noted. “They can have almost therapeutic lenses. They don’t see well with glasses and have to wear their contacts.”

If you have to wear contacts, Rapuano said wash your hands before and after touching them and your eyes, and strictly follow the directions for cleaning and disinfecting the lenses.
