If the preseason hadn't been canceled because of COVID-19, the Eagles would be playing the Jets on Thursday. Wentz and the rest of the regulars always rest, as the backups battle in the final preseason contest.
There are no preseason games this year, but Wentz is dealing with a lower-body injury. Head coach Doug Pederson said the injury isn't serious, but he decided to give his starting quarterback some time off.
"What Carson is working through right now is nothing major," said Pederson. "It's minor. It's day-to-day. This is actually a good time for this week to rest. As you know, if we played a game on Thursday, a preseason game, he wouldn't play this week anyway. All the backups would go."
Although there is no preseason game this week, the regular-season opener is approaching. The Eagles will kick off their season in Washington on Sept. 13, but Pederson said Wentz and several other players dealing with injuries will be ready to play.
"This is really a good time for him to really rest," Pederson emphasized, "for the majority of our starters, to kind of rest and prepare themselves for next week. I have no issues of where Carson is, where he's headed. He'll be ready to go."
Where Jason Peters is headed, however, remains a mystery. The longtime left tackle returned to the team to play right guard after a season-ending injury to Brandon Brooks. When left tackle Andre Dillard suffered a season-ending torn bicep, Peters was expected to move back to tackle.
However, Pederson indicated he would rather keep the veteran in his new position.
"The fact is that Jason has really embraced a new role for him," said Pederson. "He's done it well. He's playing at a high level in what we've asked him to do there, and he's comfortable. As you guys know, it's hard to disrupt too many positions with that offensive line. We've got a few more days here before we really get into regular-season week to find out who that left tackle will be."
There were reports that Peters would want a raise if he was asked to move back to the left tackle spot. The head coach would not confirm if Peters made such a demand, and again indicated that he may want to keep Peters where he is, regardless of a financial issue.
"I don't understand where some of these reports are coming from," Pederson added. "Jason Peters for us has done an outstanding job at right guard. He's comfortable at right guard. We have some options at left tackle that we're working through over there."
