Brooms come out as Phillies fans celebrate sweep of Mets

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Make it eight straight wins for the first place Phillies, who completed a weekend sweep of the New York Mets Sunday afternoon with a 3-0 win. For people taking in the game at Citizens Bank Park, it was a good time to be a Phillies fan.

There were some sulking Mets fans mixed in, but there were lots of smiles from fans in red. As one person ran around with a broom that had a Phillies' "P" on it, fans like Martina couldn't help but take a moment to soak up the scene.

"Look at the crowd, big time. All Philly love," she said.

And that was outside after the game. As Jim Starecky described, the atmosphere during the game was nothing short of amazing.

"It was electric, it was a great time," he said. "I have never seen the stadium that packed in awhile. It's been probably eight years, nine, ten years."

12-year-old Ian used a certain "P" word to describe it. "It was loud, it was like a playoff atmosphere," he said.

Pitcher Zack Wheeler went the distance for the Phils, giving up only two hits. His performance came on an emotional day for fans, as the Phillies retired the late Roy Halladay's number before the game.

"We were at Roy Halladay's no-hitter," said one fan. "Couldn’t have been better for Wheeler to come out and have that type of performance."

But it was tears of joy after the game. "People are back," said Phillies fan Cameron. "We're ready for 'Red October.'"
