Many chocolate lovers will recognize the classic Hershey's Kisses ad that runs every year around the holidays, with the confections lined up in the shape of a Christmas tree to mimic bells chiming the tune "We Wish You a Merry Christmas."
This year, the ad takes a turn. Here's a look at the original:
In the updated version, titled "Bells to Blossoms," the ad starts the same way, but it ends with a twist. Just as the chimes begin, a little girl grabs one of the Kisses to add to one of the cookies she is baking with her father.
Here is the new heartwarming ad:
The screen reads "Heartwarming the holidays," but angry internet warriors are getting steamed, saying the original ad should have been left alone.
"I don't mind an ADDITIONAL holiday commercial for Hershey's, but warping the classic bells commercial SUCKS!" one user wrote.
Another chimed in, "The perfect representation of 2020: completely ruined!"
Hershey's has taken to social media with an explanation for the update.
"We made the decision to make a slight update to the original that kept the opening holiday melodies and incorporated another holiday tradition, baking -- melding together these two time-honored traditions," Hershey's said in a statement.
"From playing the bells to baking peanut butter blossoms, it's Hershey's Kisses that have stood the test of time," the statement continues.
"For viewers who love the original version — don’t worry, it hasn’t gone away for forever," Hershey's continued. "Our hope this season is that our updated version not only harkens back memories of the original Kisses bells tune but also brings the genuine feeling of heartwarming to life with images of holiday baking between a father and daughter."
