PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The Broad Street Run is back. Philadelphia Parks and Recreation has announced the popular event will return to normal, taking place in person. But for the first time in the 10-mile run's history, it will take place in the fall: Sunday, Oct. 10.
Parks and Recreation Commissioner Kathryn Ott Lovell says they couldn’t be more excited to make this happen.
"Runners can expect basically that same race they’ve been used to the past 40 years. This will be our 41st Blue Cross Broad Street Run, and it’ll look very much the same as the race looked in 2019 and all of those years before it," Lovell said.
She says they expect to have the same number of people participating as in years past as well — about 40,000.
The 2020 race was reconfigured as a virtual event online because of COVID-19 pandemic restrictions that put the brakes on in-person group events.
Anyone who competed in that virtual race last year will get first priority to register for this year, and they will get a 20% discount on the $57 fee. Registration for those people opens on Thursday and runs through July 29.
Everyone else can register starting Aug. 1 to be entered into a lottery to fill any remaining spots.
Organizers say they are already planning for 2022, when the run will return to the first Sunday in May.
