PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Two men accused of driving weapons from Virginia to Pennsylvania during the 2020 presidential election have been convicted of gun offenses.
A judge on Wednesday found Antonio LaMotta and Joshua Macias guilty of carrying firearms without a license and of carrying firearms publicly in Philadelphia. Both men, however, were acquitted of election interference charges.
LaMotta and Macias were arrested while approaching the Pennsylvania Convention Center on Nov. 5, 2020, while votes were being counted. Police found handguns on each man and an AR-style rifle in their vehicle.
“Since then, my office has worked vigorously to make sure LaMotta and Macias were held accountable for their crimes and denied future opportunities to subvert American democracy,” District Attorney Larry Krasner said in a statement released on Wednesday.
Krasner said the convictions prevent LaMotta and Macias from legally purchasing firearms under Virginia law, most states' laws, and federal law.
Both men, Krasner said, took part in the Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol after being released on bail. LaMotta was arrested for his involvement, he said, and Macias’ appearance on video in the company of Proud Boys and Oath Keepers leadership, could lead to more consequences.
