PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The parents of one of the teens accused of killing 22-year-old Penn State student Billy Schmidt have been ordered to stand trial.
They are accused of helping their son, 16-year-old Azzubair Outen-Fleming, escape to Colorado following the June shooting in South Philadelphia.
Prosecutors laid out the evidence against the boy’s mother, 45-year-old Milika Abdulmalik, and stepfather, 35-year-old Donte Abdulmalik, during a preliminary hearing on Thursday. Defense attorneys argued that prosecutors can’t place either of the parents in the vehicle with Outen-Fleming. And, they said phone records don’t prove who traveled to Colorado; they claim people sometimes travel with someone else’s phone.
“Everything is moving forward right now, at least,” Schmidt’s father, William, told NBC10 outside the Criminal Justice Center. “It’s just the first part.”
Outen-Fleming and Kaiseem Smith, also 16, are both charged with murder. They are accused of stealing Schmidt’s cellphone near his home in South Philly and shooting him when he tried to get it back.
They both waived their right to a preliminary hearing. Outen-Fleming’s 19-year-old brother, Kadafi Flemming, who is accused of dropping off the teens that night, also waived his hearing.
