Juvenile being questioned in South Philly fatal shooting of Penn State student

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Law enforcement sources said police are questioning a juvenile possibly connected to the shooting of 22-year-old Billy Schmidt, the Penn State student killed in South Philadelphia last week.

Sources said they got a lead while investigating a separate robbery at Broad Street and Snyder Avenue. Officials said the juvenile is being investigated for a number of robberies in that area.

Police said Schmidt was shot by two suspects around 1:30 a.m. on June 6, just yards from his home. Investigators released video footage of the suspects; they robbed him of his phone before running away.

Hundreds of people packed the corner where he was shot on Thursday night to remember Schmidt. Friends, loved ones and neighbors, some even strangers, gathered at 20th and Durfor streets.

“Everyone’s here for him,” said his father, Bill Schmidt. “He’s got the greatest group of friends I’ve ever seen. I just hope he’s looking down and seeing how much everyone loves him.

“It’s going to be hard for me. We watched every football, baseball game together. Football season’s going to be torture with him not next to me.”

As with every homicide, the city is offering a $20,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction.
