PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A suspect has turned himself in, in connection with last summer’s deadly Grays Ferry mass shooting.
Just before 1 a.m. on July 7, 2025, 15 people opened fire on a large crowd gathered at South Etting and Dickinson streets, a narrow block with row homes on either side. Three people died: 19-year-old Jason Reese, 23-year-old Zahir Wylie and 24-year-old Azir Harris.
Nine others, including Zamir Satchell, were shot and taken to the hospital. Earlier this month, prosecutors revealed in court that Satchell, who was shot in the face, died.
Although they are still awaiting the autopsy report about the exact cause of Satchell’s death, prosecutors plan to file additional homicide charges.
Authorities said those who fired their guns were shooting at “phantom people,” and they are still unsure what sparked the gunfire.
On Thursday, Christopher Battle turned himself in at Philadelphia Police Headquarters near Broad and Callowhill streets shortly after 11 a.m. When police identified Battle as a suspect last August, he was 24 years old. Battle faces charges including murder, attempted murder, assault and weapons offenses.
Four other men are being held for trial in the case. Prosecutors recently withdrew charges against one other defendant, Jihad Gray.
On Thursday, April 30, police arrested Zaki Harrell in connection with the shooting. He was apprehended at a home on the 2200 block of Beechwood Street in West Passyunk.
That's about a 20-minute walk from where the shooting took place.
He faces charges including murder, aggravated assault and criminal conspiracy, as well as additional charges of causing or risking a catastrophe, riot, possession of an instrument of crime, and recklessly endangering another person.
