PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — CNN has cut ties with someone Pennsylvanians know very well.

The cable network said it "parted ways" with former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum after controversial remarks he made last month.

Santorum had been a senior political commentator for the network since 2017. Before that, he served in the U.S. Senate from 1995 to 2007.

In an April speech at the conservative Young America's Foundation, Santorum said "there isn't much Native American culture in American culture." Calls for his firing soon followed.

Santorum later said he misspoke and that his comments were inaccurate, but he never apologized.

In a tweet after CNN's announcement, Santorum said in his latest role he knew he would be providing commentary that is not regularly heard by the typical CNN viewer and that he appreciated the opportunity at the network.

He then said he'll continue fighting for conservative principles and values.
