Cops say 3 shot dead in Wilmington home, while 12-year-old girl survives

WILMINGTON, Del. (KYW Newsradio) — There were several shootings in Wilmington, Delaware, on Monday night. In one case, police say, a shooting inside a home left two women dead and a young girl wounded — and the alleged shooter killed himself.

Police are describing the incident at the home near 2nd and Van Buren streets as "domestic in nature." Neighbors are calling is a murder-suicide.

Two women, ages 30 and 19, were shot and killed inside the home. And the alleged shooter, a 32-year-old man, shot and killed himself. The fourth gunshot victim, a 12-year-old girl, survived. She is in stable condition.

Police haven’t elaborated on the circumstances leading up to this incident while the investigation is underway.

Officers also responded to a double shooting at 6th and Monroe streets. Police say the victims were men ages 32 and 33. The younger victim died while the other is recovering.

Later in the night, close to 11 p.m., a man was shot at 23rd and Jessup. Police describe his condition as "extremely critical."

Wilmington, like in Philadelphia and other places around the country, is dealing with a sharp rise in homicides.

In the last figures posted on the Wilmington Police Department website, there were a total of 16 homicides in the city as of the week ending in July 11. That is up 33% compared to the same time a year prior when there were 12 homicides.

Wilmington Police Chief Robert Tracy went to the White House earlier this month, along with other law enforcement and political leaders, to discuss efforts to combat the rise of gun violence in communities across the country.
