PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A woman was killed and two children are in critical condition after a fire tore through two row homes in Northeast Philadelphia on Wednesday morning.
It happened just after 5:30 a.m. on Stirling Street, near Hawthorne Street, in Mayfair.
The boy and girl were taken to the hospital, where they are listed in critical condition. Officials have not shared the ages of the victims or said whether or not they are related.
The fire was extinguished in about 30 minutes. Four other people — two men and two children — were treated on the scene by medics. Ten people have been displaced from their homes.
Neighbor Shaquanda McAfee saw medics trying to help the children.
“I saw them doing CPR on the little boy,” she told NBC10. “I didn’t see him move. … I hope they’re OK.”
Deputy Fire Commissioner Carl Randolph said there were no working smoke alarms in the home.
“With that being said, I’d like to take this time to say if you are in need of a smoke alarm, the Philadelphia Fire Department will come out and install them for free. All you have to do is call 311 or go to your local fire station and we will come out and install them for free,” he stressed.
