MORTON, Pa. (KYW Newsradio) — A special education program at Delaware County Intermediate Unit is helping students with developmental disabilities learn a new skill, while also spreading some Eagles love before the Super Bowl.
DCUI student Chris Galloway is taking part in an entrepreneurial project.
“We’re making buttons for the Eagles fans for the Super Bowl coming up,” Calloway said.
DCIU’s Options program works with students who have developmental disabilities, teaching them skills that will help them be more independent beyond high school. This week, they’re working on something special.
“Typically they have other work tasks, but since this momentum of the Eagles, we decided to incorporate a special project, so they’re making Eagles buttons that they are selling to the staff here at the DCIU,” said Lisa Mitchell, program supervisor.
Galloway says he really enjoys the production part of the project.
“We cut the picture out from the paper and put it on this metal thing, then put the plastic on, then put the button in the machine,” Galloway said. “It’s a little tricky but I can handle it. There’s nothing I can’t handle. That’s what I tell my own father.”
Beyond production, the project involves managing inventory and tracking orders.
“There is also an element of financial literacy because they’re handling the transactions,” Mitchell said.
Takeer Rahman is enjoying learning every aspect of the project.
“I like to help, so it makes me happy to make these buttons for people to wear them.”
The group already has more than 200 orders, and they’re taking more throughout the week.
Funds raised by the sales of the buttons will go back into the program.
