DELAWARE COUNTY, Pa. (KYW Newsradio) — A new film offers a unique look at the Vietnam War, through the eyes, ears and experiences of men and women from Delaware County.

“9000 Miles to Delco” is a documentary that features the personal stories of several Vietnam veterans from Delaware County.

“I wanted to create an opportunity for people like that to tell their stories before it’s too late,” said executive producer Joe McGinn. “The average age of a Vietnam veteran is now 79 years old.”

McGinn, a Delaware County native, said his father and three uncles all served in Vietnam.

“There was a significant amount of folks from Delco that served, proportionally higher than other parts of the country,” he said.

He said the film is not about battlefield tactics or policy behind the war. Instead, it tells stories of people who were drafted and were enlisted, across different ranks and branches.

“It really kind of tells their story in a truly, kind of human way,” he said.

“One of the recurring themes when talking to and hearing the stories of these different individuals is how important home was to them, their families, their homes, where they were going back to.”

“9000 Miles to Delco” is set to premiere at the Media Theater on Nov. 10, the birthday of the United States Marine Corps, with another screening on Veterans Day, Nov. 11.
