PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — We can’t tune in to the Eagles, so let’s turn our attention to Super Bowl Sunday snacks.
“That’s the only thing it’s about when the Eagles aren’t playing,” said Philly chef Aziza Young. “When I go to Super Bowl parties, it’s to eat.
“If the game isn’t good, then you have to have something to fall back on.”
Young said Super Bowl Sunday is a great time to experiment in the kitchen, especially this pandemic year: “There’s not going to be a lot of pressure on you because there’s not going to be a big party.”
You can create a festive atmosphere even if it’s just for you and the people in your household.
“With smaller parties, you can accomplish a lot more,” she said. “You’re not going to break your pocket. You can most likely spend a fraction of what you usually spend for a smaller gathering.”
So, what’s on the menu? To start, hoagies.
“You can do so much with these. You know, turkey hoagies with avocados and hard-boiled eggs and tomatoes and arugula.”
But the best Super Bowl food, Young said, is wings.
“Wings are the top. You can season them any way you want.”
Check out one of her recipes below:
Spicy Thai Basil Buffalo Wings
Serving size: 10-12 jumbo wings
Ingredients:
1 tablespoon Buffalo seasoning
½ teaspoon granulated garlic
½ teaspoon smoked chipotle paprika
2 tablespoons blended oil
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
4 Thai basil leaves
1 cup Buffalo wing sauce
1 cup blue cheese crumbles
2 ounces blue cheese dressing
Directions:
Put wings in a large mixing bowl and set aside.
In a small mixing bowl, add seasonings, oil and Worcestershire sauce and mix until combined. Pour seasoning mixture over your wings and with your hands, mix them until they are well seasoned. Transfer the wings to a storage bag and allow them to marinate in the fridge for at least one hour, but the longer the better.
When you’re ready to cook these bad boys, set your air fryer on 400 degrees and cook the wings for 15 minutes on both sides. While your wings are cooking, take your four Thai basil leaves and muddle them in a mortar and pestle. Take your muddled basil and mix it with the Buffalo wing sauce.
Once your wings are done cooking, toss them in the Thai basil Buffalo sauce. Drizzle blue cheese dressing over your wings and finish them with blue cheese crumbles.
