CHERRY HILL, N.J. (KYW Newsradio) — A threat against New Jersey synagogues is no longer active, according to the FBI. The person believed to be responsible has been located. So far no other information has been released.
Synagogues across New Jersey were under high alert Friday morning after the FBI said it had recovered credible information about a “broad threat.” The warning came at a time when conversations about antisemitism have gained prominence thanks, in part, to remarks from public figures, including the performer former known as Kanye West and NBA star Kyrie Irving.
FBI officials in Newark issued an alert on Thursday, announcing on Twitter they had discovered "credible information" online about the threat.
The FBI had urged synagogues to "take all security precautions to protect your community and facility." No individual synagogue was named.
The FBI has given no specifics about the threat, but they urged synagogues to "take all security precautions to protect your community and facility." No individual synagogue was named, and officials are still investigating.
Cherry Hill police said they had been in contact with Jewish leaders in South Jersey.
The mayor of Jersey City said police were posted at the city’s seven synagogues, as well as in other Jewish communities.
Attorney General Matt Platkin confirmed in a statement, “Law enforcement will be increasing patrols in sensitive areas. Some of these patrols will be in marked vehicles and others will not.”
He had cautioned residents not to be alarmed by the increase in police presence, as it was out of an abundance of caution. He also urged New Jersey residents to be extra vigilant and to immediately report any suspicious activity to the police.
