PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The Roxborough High School football team will play its first game Friday night since a teammate was shot and killed in an ambush outside the school after a scrimmage last month.
The team has dedicated its season to 14-year-old Nicolas Elizalde, who was killed in the ambush on Sept. 27. Four other teens were wounded.
Roxborough High School Principal Kristin Williams-Smalley said the tragedy has brought the close-knit football team even closer together.
“Our team is bonded together. Unfortunately, they were bonded before, but now this is something that can never separate them. And they’re surviving,” she said.
Roxborough resumes its season Friday at 3 p.m. at their home field with a game against Kensington High School.
So far, two people, 21-year-old Yaaseen Bivins and 17-year-old Zyhied Jones have been arrested in the fatal shooting. They face murder and related charges.
Police are still looking for other suspects, including 16-year-old Dayron Burney-Thorn, who remains at large.
