PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) -- That Christmas tree in your living room may be ready to come down, and there's a special recycling program in Philly that can help you use it to fill some hungry stomachs.

The Philly Goat Project is a small nonprofit that uses goats for environmental and wellness education, and for job training.

"We create all kinds of fun ways for people to enjoy the outdoors and learn about kindness to animals," Karen Krivit, director of the project, said.

Krivit says one of those fun ways is their Christmas tree recycling program. People can make a donation and watch one of the project's 14 goats munch on those old pine needles.

"The cost of $20 a tree helps cover the cost of chipping the tree when the goats finish eating the needles, and storing the tree and taking care of our wonderful goats," she said.

Krivit says anyone who wants to drop off a tree must make a reservation online, but anyone who wants to watch the goats make those needles disappear can just drive through their makeshift safari at the Awbury Arboretum in Germantown, Philadlephia.

"They can come to the farm to visit the goats any time," she said.
