MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Pa. (KYW Newsradio) — Around 1,000 people packed the gym of Wissahickon High School in Montgomery County Monday to hear Gov. Josh Shapiro and Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer stump for Kamala Harris.

“Vice President Harris has been battle tested. She is ready to not just be the standard bearer of our party, but to be the 47th President of the United States of America,” Shapiro said.

Whitmer laid the foundation of some of the new messaging coming from Harris’ campaign — like “real freedom” to not just get by, but to get ahead, and make decisions about our own body — by sharing her own story.

“I was lucky. I had a great job, I had daycare, I had my family and a voice in my community. And that’s what every American deserves in this country, no less… dignity, decency and respect,”  Whitmer said.

Both also attacked former President Donald Trump’s record compared to that of the Biden-Harris administration.

“Fewer people went to work in Pennsylvania when Donald Trump was president, fewer roads got repaired, fewer bridges got built and let me tell you what else there was less of when he was president: There was less freedom when he was president,” Shapiro said.

The two then talked up accomplishments of the Biden-Harris administration like creating jobs, boosting infrastructure, and reducing the cost of insulin, among other achievements.

Both Whitmer and Shapiro are believed to be top contenders as Harris’ running mate in November.

Harris said she would make her pick for vice president before Aug. 7.
