KYW Medical Report: Avoid ultra-processed foods

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — We know it is important to limit processed foods — like cheese, various lunch meats and white bread. There are concerns about the impact on cardiovascular health and even some forms of cancer.

But now — largely due to scientific advances that have made it easier to produce cheaper and often less natural foods — medical groups are warning against so-called ultra-processed foods.

These foods dramatically increase the risk of cardiovascular problems, especially in people who already have issues.

Ultra-processed foods are high in preservatives, fat, food coloring and artificial flavoring. They also are high in salt, and if grains are present, they are often refined.

One of the best ways to achieve good health is to be careful about the foods you consume.
