KYW Medical Report: Breaking the habit of smoking cigarettes

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — There is no ideal way to quit smoking cigarettes, but there are some methods that work better than others.

Talk to any person who specializes in helping people stop the habit and they will tell you that the most important predictor of success is if a person wants to quit and is totally committed to doing so.

In fact, the most successful stories are from people who have said, “I have had enough and I’m stopping.” However, for many others, it is a combination of behavioral support and medications.

Many physicians counsel their patients. In the best-case scenario, they spend about 20 minutes, but for better results, it requires an hour and a half to five hours of counseling, and it is best achieved over multiple visits.
